Maggie Richards is a certified Somatic Experiencing® Practitioner (SEP), and former Co-Chair of Somatic Experiencing Association UK.
With more than 15 years' experience, she helps adults from diverse backgrounds recover from trauma, anxiety, chronic stress, burnout, grief and other overwhelming life experiences by working directly with the nervous system's natural capacity for healing and regulation. Her primary specialism is supporting survivors of sexual abuse and sexual assault. Drawing on both professional trainings and her own journey of healing from sexual trauma, she brings a depth of compassion, strength and understanding to the healing process that many find empowering. Maggie is appreciated for her warm, grounded and practical approach. Clients tend to seek her out when they feel stuck despite years of personal development or traditional talking therapies. Her work helps people move beyond insight alone towards an uplifting change in how they feel, relate and live. She works online with clients throughout the UK and internationally. What is Somatic Experiencing?
Somatic Experiencing (SE) is a pioneering body-focused approach to healing trauma and stress, developed by psychotherapist Dr Peter Levine. It works by helping the nervous system complete survival responses that were interrupted during overwhelming experiences, leading to lasting relief from trauma-related symptoms. Instead of analysing trauma through thoughts or memories alone, SE emphasises bodily awareness to resolve dysregulated fight, flight, freeze and collapse responses. Trauma isn’t caused solely by the event(s), but by how the body and nervous system failed to complete the natural survival responses needed to discharge that stress. SE supports this release gently and safely, helping you feel more relaxed, whole and happy. How does Somatic Experiencing work?
It's a 'bottom-up' approach, working with organic bodily sensations. not just thoughts and emotions. Key principles include:
With skilful 'listening', innate new possibilities for recovery and wholeness are revealed. SE helps gradually shift lanes from living a life governed by the past to leading a new life rooted in inner strength, open to the limitless possibilities for good ahead. |
